He married Lady Margaret Pleydell-Bouverie, daughter of Jacob Bouverie, 4th Earl of Radnor, on 29 October 1873. He died on 2 January 1907 at age 65.
     Maj.-Gen. David Makgill Crichton Maitland was baptised with the name of David Maitland Makgill Crichton.
