Captain John Hotham was born on 29 January 1805. He was the son of Lt.-Col. George Hotham and Caroline Gee. He married Maria Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Henry Thompson, on 9 April 1842. He married Mary Anne Roundell, daughter of Reverend Danson Richardson Roundell, on 11 January 1855. He died on 11 February 1881 at age 76.
