He was the son of Ernst Prinz zur Lippe-Biesterfeld and Karoline Friederike Gräfin von Wartensleben.2 He married Marie Herzogin von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, daughter of Adolf Friedrich V Großherog von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Elisabeth Marie Frederica Amelia Agnes Prinzessin von Anhalt-Dessau, on 11 August 1914. He died on 15 September 1952 at age 79 at Oberkassel.
