Day Hort Macdowall, 22nd of Garthland was born on 3 July 1795.1 He was the son of Day Hort Macdowall and Wilhelmina Graham.2 He married Eleanora Frances Murray Macdowall, daughter of David Macdowall and Eleanor Mary Grant, on 16 April 1838.1 He died on 14 September 1870 at age 75, without issue.1
He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Renfrewshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Renfrewshire.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 3rd Buffs.2
