Anthony William Garthwaite was born on 10 November 1917.1 He was the son of Sir William Garthwaite, 1st Bt. and Janet Rodrigues.2 He married Hon. Waveney Mancroft Samuel, daughter of Sir Arthur Samuel, 1st Baron Mancroft, on 1 December 1950.1 He died on 4 October 1972 at age 54.1
He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He gained the rank of officer in the service of the Scots Guards, General List and Leicestershire Regiment.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1942, when he was invalided.1 He was Vice-Consul to Kansas City in 1942.1 He was British Naval Liaison Office in 1944 at San Pedro, California, U.S.A..1
