Archibald William Douglas, 8th Marquess of Queensberry was born on 18 April 1818. He was the son of John Douglas, 7th Marquess of Queensberry and Sarah Douglas.1 He married Caroline Margaret Clayton, daughter of General Sir William Robert Clayton, 5th Bt. and Alice Hugh Massey O'Donnell, on 2 June 1840. He was also reported to have been married on 28 May 1840 at Gretna Green, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.2 He died on 6 August 1858 at age 40 at Kinmount, killed by the accidental explosion of his gun.

General Sir William Robert Clayton, 5th Bt. was born on 28 August 1786 at Harleyford, Buckinghamshire, England.3 He was the son of Sir William Clayton, 4th Bt. and Mary East.2 He married Alice Hugh Massey O'Donnell, daughter of Colonel Hugh O'Donnell and Alice Hutchinson, on 10 May 1817.1 He and Alice Hugh Massey O'Donnell were divorced in 1830.3 He died on 19 September 1866 at age 80 at Southsea, Hampshire, England.3
