Caroline Margaret Clayton was the daughter of General Sir William Robert Clayton, 5th Bt. and Alice Hugh Massey O'Donnell.2 She was also reported to have been married on 28 May 1840 at Gretna Green, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.1 She married Archibald William Douglas, 8th Marquess of Queensberry, son of John Douglas, 7th Marquess of Queensberry and Sarah Douglas, on 2 June 1840. She died on 14 February 1904.1

General Sir William Robert Clayton, 5th Bt. was born on 28 August 1786 at Harleyford, Buckinghamshire, England.2 He was the son of Sir William Clayton, 4th Bt. and Mary East.3 He married Alice Hugh Massey O'Donnell, daughter of Colonel Hugh O'Donnell and Alice Hutchinson, on 10 May 1817.1 He and Alice Hugh Massey O'Donnell were divorced in 1830.2 He died on 19 September 1866 at age 80 at Southsea, Hampshire, England.2
He fought in the Battle of the Pyrenees.1 He fought in the Battle of Genappe.1 He fought in the Battle of Vittoria.1 He fought in the Battle of Waterloo.1 He fought in the Battle of Quatre Bras, where he was wounded.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Marlow between 1832 and 1842.1 He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Clayton, of Marden, co.
