Sir Matthew William Thompson, 1st Bt. was born on 1 February 1820.2 He is the son of Matthew Thompson and Elizabeth Sarah Atkinson.2 He married Mary Ann Thompson, daughter of Benjamin Thompson and Elizabeth Whitaker, on 10 May 1843.2 He died on 1 December 1891 at age 71.2
He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was a practising barrister in 1862.1 He held the office of Mayor of Bradford between 1862 and 1863.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Bradford between 1867 and 1868.2 He held the office of Mayor of Bradford between 1872 and 1873.2 He was chairman of Forth Bridge and Midland Railway Companies.2 He was created 1st Baronet Thompson, of Park Gate, Guiseley, co. York [U.K.] on 18 April 1890.1
