James Ruthven, 6th Lord Ruthven of Freeland was born on 16 December 1733.1 He was the son of James Ruthven, 5th Lord Ruthven of Freeland and Janet Nisbet.2 He married Lady Mary Elizabeth Leslie, daughter of David Leslie, 8th Earl of Leven and Wilhelmina Nisbet, on 12 November 1776.1 He died on 27 December 1789 at age 56.1
He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 12th Foot.1 He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Ruthven of Freeland [S., 1651] on 3 July 1783.1 In 1784 he voted unchallenged at elections of representative Scottish peers.1
