General Sir Robert Laurie, 5th Bt. was the son of Sir Robert Laurie, 4th Bt. and Christian Erskine.2 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Maria Ruthven, daughter of James Ruthven, 5th Lord Ruthven of Freeland and Lady Anne Stuart, on 18 July 1763 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1,2 He and Elizabeth Maria Ruthven were divorced on 2 February 1774.1 He married, secondly, Judith Hatley on 25 April 1778 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England.2 He died on 10 September 1804 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.2 He died intestate and his estate was administered in January 1805.2
General Sir Robert Laurie, 5th Bt. held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries Burghs between 1774 and 1804.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1779 in the service of the 16th Light Dragoons.2 He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Laurie, of Maxwelton, co. Dumfries [N.S., 1685] on 28 April 1779.2 He held the office of Knight Marshal of Scotland between 1785 and 1804.2 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1798.2 He gained the rank of General in 1803.2
