He married Luise Dorothea von Sachsen-Meiningen, daughter of Ernst Ludwig I Herzog von Sachsen-Meiningen and Dorothea Marie von Sachsen-Gotha, on 17 September 1729. He died on 10 March 1772 at age 72.
     He was a member of the House of Wettin. He gained the title of Herzog von Sachsen-Gotha.

He married, secondly, Elisabeth Sophie von Hohenzollern, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Kurfürst von Brandenburg and Dorothea zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, on 3 June 1714. He died on 24 November 1724 at age 52.
     He gained the title of Herzog von Sachsen-Meiningen.

He was the son of Philip Landgraf von Hessen-Philippsthal and Catherine Amalia zu Solms-Laubach. He married Karoline Christine von Sachsen-Eisenach, daughter of Johann Wilhelm Herzog von Sachsen-Eisenach and Christine Juliane von Baden-Durlach, on 25 November 1725. He died on 8 May 1770 at age 87 at Philippsthal, Germany.
     He gained the title of Landgraf von Hessen-Philippsthal.
