He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Kincardineshire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Kincardineshire.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Gladstone, of Fasque and Balfour, co. Kincardine [U.K., 1846] on 20 March 1889.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier in the service of the Royal Company of Archers.1
