Maj.-Gen. Orde Charles Wingate was born on 26 February 1903 at Naini Tal, India.1 He was the son of Colonel George Wingate and Mary Ethel Stanley Orde-Browne.1 He married Lorna Elizabeth Margaret Paterson, daughter of Walter Edward Moncrieff Paterson of Tilliefoure, on 24 January 1935 at Chelsea Old Church, Chelsea, London, England.1 He died on 24 March 1944 at age 41 at Thion Village, Manjpur, India, killed in action.1 He was buried at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, U.S.A.G.1
He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England.2 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.2 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 29 August 1923 in the Royal Artillery.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 29 August 1925.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 16 May 1928.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1938 and bars (1941 and 1943.)1 He fought in the Palestine Campaign between 1938 and 1939.1 He gained the rank of Major on 29 August 1940.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he organised the Chindits operating in Burma.1 In 1943 he attended the Quebec Conference with Winston Churchill.2 He gained the rank of Acting Major-General on 18 September 1943.1
