     William Maxwell was born on 21 May 1755 at Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Robert Maxwell and Elizabeth Henry.1
     He gained the rank of Gunner in 1795 in the 4th Battalion, Royal Artillery.1
