     John Elphinstone of that Ilk and of Pittendriech is the son of James Elphinstone of Pittendriech, younger.2 He died in July 1508, soon after.1
     In 1496 granted charters of his Stirlingshire lands and 1497 but resigned them to his overlord Patrick, 4th Lord Lindsay of the Byres (see LINDSAY, E), to be held direct from the Crown and erected into the territorial Barony of Elphinstone.1
