Captain Walter James Stopford was born on 4 July 1833.1 He was the son of Lt.-Col. Hon. Edward Stopford and Horatia Charlotte Lockwood.1 He married Annette Jane Stopford, daughter of Vice-Admiral Hon. Sir Montagu Stopford and Cordelia Winifreda Whitmore, on 7 October 1863.1 He died on 14 June 1908 at age 74.1
He gained the rank of Captain in the 52nd Light Infantry.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1 He was Inspector-General of the Military prison Department.1 He held the office of Gentleman Usher to HM Queen Victoria.1 He was Commissioner of Prisons.1 He held the office of Gentleman Usher to HM King Edward VII.1
