Alan Graham Dewar was born on 23 July 1929.1 He is the son of Rear-Admiral Alan Ramsay Dewar and Euphemia Valentine Graham Ford.2 He married Rachel Grizel Binnie Sanderson, daughter of Charles William Sanderson, on 23 November 1956.1
He was educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond, Perthshire, Scotland.1 He was with the Royal Army Service Corps in Palestine, Egypt and Cyrenaica between 1947 and 1949.1 He graduated from East of Scotland School of Agriculture, Scotland, with a Diploma of Agriculture (Dip.Ag.).1 He was a farmer between 1956 and 1984 at Hedderwick Hill, Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.).1 He was invested as a Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1995.1 He lived in 2003 at Oakwood, Allanton, Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland.1
