     General William Harrison Askwith was born on 7 September 1811.2 He was the son of John Hadden Askwith and Catherine Harrison.2 He married Elizabeth Ranken, daughter of George Ranken, on 14 September 1854.3 He died on 25 November 1897 at age 86.1
     General William Harrison Askwith gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 18 December 1829 in the service of the Royal Artillery.2 He fought in the Carlist War in Spain between 1838 and 1840, as British Military Attaché, and was was mentioned in despatches.3 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of Isabella the Catholic of Spain.3 He gained the rank of Captain on 23 November 1841.2 He was Superintendant of the Royal Gunpowder Factory at Waltham between 1855 and 1868.3 He gained the rank of Colonel on 26 October 1858.2 He was Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery on 15 April 1877.1,3 He gained the rank of General on 27 June 1879.3
