Sir James Colville of Ochiltree was the son of Sir Robert Colville of Hiltoun and Ochiltree and Elizabeth Arnot.2 He married, firstly, Alison Bruce, daughter of Sir David Bruce of Clackmannan and Janet Blackadder.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Forrester, daughter of unknown Forrester, on 21 May 1536.1 He died circa 4 December 1540.1
He held the office of Comptroller of the Household [Scotland] in 1526.1 In 1530 he obtained Easter Wemyss from Sir James Hamilton of Finnart in exchange for Ochiltree.1 He held the office of Judge of the Court of Session in 1532.1 In 1540/41 he was attainted for treason.1
