     He fought in the Second World War.2 He gained the rank of Pilot Officer in the service of the 32 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.1

     Esme Mae Burcher was the daughter of Albert Victor Kerry Burcher.2 She married, firstly, P/O Kenneth Kirkcaldie, son of Herbert Kirkcaldie, before 1940.1 She married, secondly, Ralph Francis Alnwick Grey, Baron Grey of Naunton, son of Francis Arthur Grey and Mary Wilke Spence, in 1944.1 She died on 22 March 1996.1
      At University of New Zealand, New Zealand, Master of Law (LL.M.).3 From before 1940, her married name became Kirkcaldie.1 From 1944, her married name became Grey.1 As a result of her marriage, Esme Mae Burcher was styled as Baroness Grey of Naunton on 17 September 1968. She was invested as a Dame of Grace, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (D.St.J.).1
