     Sir Robert Maxwell of Orchardtoun, 2nd Bt. was the son of Sir Robert Maxwell of Orchardtoun, 1st Bt. and Anne Maclellan.2 He married, thirdly, Margaret Maxwell, daughter of Henry Maxwell and Margaret Maxwell.2 He married, firstly, Janet Gordon, daughter of John Gordon of Rusco.3 He married, secondly, Lady Anne Carey, daughter of Henry Carey, 2nd Earl of Monmouth and Lady Martha Cranfield, in 1668.1 He died on 24 January 1693, without issue.1,3
     He was appointed Knight before 1655.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for the Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire [Scotland] between 1669 and 1674.2 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Maxwell, of Orchardtoun [N.S., 1663] before 1673.1 He held the office of Sheriff of County Down in 1673.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for the Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire [Scotland] from 1681 to 1682.2 On 20 October 1681 he was retoured heir to his father in the lands of Orchardton and others.3 On 28 February 1682 he was retoured heir to his father in the lands of St. Mary's Isle and others.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Londonderry in 1683.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Down.2 He lived at Waringstown, County Down, Ireland.2 He lived at Ballycastle, County Londonderry, Ireland.2 He lived at Killyleagh, County Down, Ireland.2 On his death, his baronetcy appears to have become extinct, although it was assumed by several Maxwells in the 18th century.2

     He was styled as Viscount Claneboye between 1647 and 1658.1
