General Charles Montauban Carmichael was born on 21 December 1790.1 He was the son of James Carmichael Smyth and Mary Holyland.2 He married Mary Eliot Graham, daughter of Captain Allan Graham, on 4 March 1841.1 He died on 21 November 1870 at age 79.1
General Charles Montauban Carmichael was baptised with the name of Charles Montauban Carmichael Smyth.1 He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England.1 He was commander of the 4th Bengal Irregular Cavalry.1 He fought in the First Afghan War.3 He was decorated with the award of Ghuznec Medal.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.).1 He gained the rank of General in the service of the Indian Army.1 He was invested as a Order of Durance Empire 3rd Class.1 On 17 August 1842 his name was legally changed to Charles Montauban Carmichael by Royal Licence.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 20th Hussars.1

David Scott Carmichael Smyth was born on 15 August 1798.1 He was the son of James Carmichael Smyth and Mary Holyland.2 He married, firstly, Anne Sherwood, daughter of Maj.-Gen. J. D. Sherwood, on 25 January 1818.1 He married, secondly, Isabella Frances Oakes, daughter of William Henry Oakes, in 1839.3 He died on 3 September 1841 at age 43.3
