     Lt.-Gen. Sir Henry Pottinger, 1st Bt. was born on 3 October 1789 at Mount Pottinger, County Down, Ireland.1 He was the son of Eldred Curwen Pottinger and Anne Gordon.1 He married Susanna Maria Cooke, daughter of Captain Richard Cooke, in 1820.1 He died on 18 March 1856 at age 66 at Malta.1
     He was created 1st Baronet Pottinger [U.K.] on 27 April 1840.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) on 2 December 1842.1 He held the office of Governor of Hong Kong on 5 April 1843.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 23 May 1844.1 He held the office of Governor of the Cape of Good Hope on 28 September 1846.1 He held the office of Governor of Madras between 1847 and 1854.1
