     Gilbert Joshua Smith was born on 17 December 1843.1 He was the son of Spencer Smith and Frances Anne Seymour.1 He married Edith Charlotte Anderson-Pelham, daughter of Captain Hon. Dudley Worsley Anderson-Pelham and Madalina Sinclair, on 10 August 1875.2 He died on 4 February 1928 at age 84.1
     He was also known as Captain Gilbert Joshua Spencer-Smith.3 He gained the rank of Captain in the 85th King's Regiment of Light Infantry, and 3rd Battalion Hampshire Regiment.3 He lived at Maidenstone Heath, Bursledon, Hampshire, EnglandG.3
