     Commander Sir Archibald Richard James Southby, 1st Bt. was born on 8 July 1886.1 He was the son of Richard Southby and Hon. Isabella Hewitt.2 He married, firstly, Phyllis Mary Garton, daughter of Charles Henry Garton and Juliet Westlake, on 20 July 1909.1 He and Phyllis Mary Garton were divorced in 1962.1 He married, secondly, Noreen Vera Simm, daughter of Bernard Compton Simm, on 28 March 1962.1 He died on 30 October 1969 at age 83.1
     He was educated at Brandon House School, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.1 He was educated at H.M.S. Britannia, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Flag Lieutenant and Flag Lieutenant-Commander between 1913 and 1918 in the Grand Fleet and North America and West India Station.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was member of the Allied Naval Armistice Commission between 1918 and 1919.1 He was member of the Naval Inter-Allied Commission of Control between 1919 and 1920.1 He retired from the military in 1920, with the rank of Commander, late of the Royal Navy.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Surrey in 1927.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Epsom between 1928 and 1947.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Surrey in 1933.1 He held the office of a Lord Commissioner of Treasury between 1935 and 1937.1 He was created 1st Baronet Southby, of Burford, co. Oxford [U.K.] on 12 June 1937.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Oxfordshire between 1938 and 1946.1 He held the office of Younger Brother, Trinity House in 1944.1 He was awarded the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.1

     Phyllis Mary Garton was born in 1886 at Epson, Surrey, England.1 She was the daughter of Charles Henry Garton and Juliet Westlake.1 She married Commander Sir Archibald Richard James Southby, 1st Bt., son of Richard Southby and Hon. Isabella Hewitt, on 20 July 1909.2 She and Commander Sir Archibald Richard James Southby, 1st Bt. were divorced in 1962.2 She died on 25 April 1974.2
     Her married name became Southby.
