     John James Sainsbury was born on 12 June 1844.1 He was the son of John Sainsbury and Elizabeth Coombes.1 He married Mary Ann Staples, daughter of Benjamin Staples, on 20 April 1869.1 He died on 3 January 1928 at age 83.1
     In 1869 at 173 Drury Lane, London, EnglandG, he opened a grocer's store, which he subsequently built into a chain of 128 stores under the Sainsbury name.1 He was chairman and governing director of Sainsbury's between 1922 and 1928.
