Sir Joseph Banks, 1st and last Bt. was born on 13 February 1743/44 at Argyle Street, London, EnglandG.1 He was the son of William Banks and Sarah Bate.1 He married Dorothy Hugessen, daughter of William Western Hugessen and Thomazine Honywood, on 23 March 1779 at St. Andrew's Church, Holborn, London, EnglandG.3 He died on 19 June 1820 at age 76 at Soho Square, Soho, London, EnglandG, without issue.1 His will was proven (by probate) in September 1820.3
     He was educated in 1753 at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He was educated in 1756 at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 16 December 1760.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1766.3 In 1766 he travelled to Newfoundland.3 Between 1768 and 1771 he accompanied Captain James Cook on his voyage around the world, as the expedition's botanist.3 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 21 November 1771 with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)3 In 1772 he voyaged to Iceland.3 He was president of the Royal Society between 1778 and 1820.3 In 1779 he purchased the estate of Spring Grove, in Hounslow, Middlesex.3 He was created 1st Baronet Banks, of Revesby Abbey, co. Lincoln [Great Britain] on 24 March 1781.1 He held the office of Sheriff of Lincolnshire between 1794 and 1795.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) on 1 July 1795.3 He held the office of Commissioner of the Board of Trade in 1797.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 29 March 1797.3 He was founding president of the Royal Institution between 1799 and 1800.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1815.3
     On his death, his baronetcy became extinct.3
