Jean Nicholsen was born on 22 September 1713. She was the daughter of James Nicholsen and Anne Allan. She married Thomas Lyon, 8th Earl of Strathmore, son of John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Lady Elizabeth Stanhope, on 20 July 1736 at Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham, England. She died on 22 April 1778 at age 64 at Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham, England. She was buried on 26 April 1778.

John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore was born on 8 May 1663 at Castle Lyon. He was the son of Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Helen Middleton. He married Lady Elizabeth Stanhope, daughter of Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield and Lady Elizabeth Butler, on 21 September 1691. He died on 10 May 1712 at age 49.

Charles Lyon, 6th Earl of Strathmore was born circa 1699. He was the son of John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Lady Elizabeth Stanhope. He was christened on 12 July 1699. He married Susan Cochrane, daughter of John Campbell Cochrane, 4th Earl of Dundonald and Lady Anne Murray, on 25 July 1725 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He died on 11 May 1728, from an accidental wound recevied in a street brawl two days earlier.
