     He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Somerset Light Infantry.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1902 and 1903.1 He fought in the Nigeria Campaign in 1903, where he was mentioned in dispatches twice.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1905.1 He fought in the First World War.1
