     John Cotton was born in 1802 at Balham Hill, Clapham Common, London, England.1 He was the son of William Cotton and Catherine Savery.1 He married Susannah Edwards in January 1843.1 He died on 15 December 1849 at Victoria, Australia.1
     He was educated at Crediton Grammar School, Crediton, Devon, England.1 He was educated at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He wrote the book The Song Birds of Great Britain , published 1836.1 He was appointed Fellow, Zoologicial Society (F.Z.S.)1
