     He was probably younger brother of William, Seigneur de Vernon, Normandy (d c 1080.)2 In 1086 he held 14 manors at the Domesday Survey.2 His manors were assumed by antiquarians in later centuries to have formed a Cheshire palatine Barony, that of Shipbrooke, but there is now considerable doubt whether the County Palatine of Chester existed before its incorporation as an appanage of the Crown.2
