     He was educated at Maitland High School, Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 6th Dragoon Gaurds (Carabiniers).1 He fought in the Boer War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1
