     Joseph Locke was born on 9 August 1805 at Attercliffe, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.2 He was the son of William Locke and Esther Teesdale.2 He married Phoebe McCreery, daughter of John McCreery, in 1834.1,2 He died on 18 September 1860 at age 55.2
     He became Gertrude Laurence Locke's adoptive father.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1838.2 He was a railway engineer.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Honiton in 1847.1,2
