     James Sandilands, 1st Lord Torphichen was the son of Sir James Sandilands, 7th of Calder and Mariot Forrester.2 He married Janet Murray, daughter of William Murray of Polmaise and Touchadam, before 12 September 1560.1 He died on 29 September 1579, without issue.1
     He was appointed Knight, Order of St. John in 1530.1 He was Prior of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in 1546.1 He was created 1st Lord Torphichen, of Saint John of Torphichen, West Lothian [Scotland] on 24 January 1563/64, by a regrant to himself and his heirs and assignees of the lands, estates and offices previously attaching to the office of Prior of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in Scotland (who had been entitled to a seat in Parliament through holding the feudal barony of Torphichen).1
