He was educated at Glenalmond College, Glenalmond, Perthshire, ScotlandG.2 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.2 He was Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Highlanders between 1989 and 1991.2 He was Commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade, Northern Ireland between 1994 and 1995.2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1996.2 He gained the rank of Major-General.2 He was appointed Lieutenant, Royal Victorian Order (L.V.O.) in 2010.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) in 2011. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Moray in 2020.

Sir Claude Matthew Smith-Dodsworth, 7th Bt. was born on 12 August 1888.1 He is the son of Sir Matthew Blayney Smith-Dodsworth, 6th Bt. and Agnes Eliza Crowder.2 He married Cyrilla Emme Marie Louise Taylor, daughter of William Ernest Taylor, on 6 February 1932.1 He died on 18 May 1940 at age 51.1
He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Regiment.1 He succeeded as the 7th Baronet Smith, of Newland Park and Thornton Watlass, co. York [G.B., 1784] on 8 December 1931.2
