     Brigadier John Balfour Riddell was born on 2 May 1880.¹ He was the son of Colonel Robert Vansittart Riddell and Louisa Flora Steel Dick.² He married Margaret Alice Smith, daughter of J. W. Smith, on 6 August 1908.¹ He died on 20 February 1960 at age 79.¹
     He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.¹ He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, England.¹ He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded and was mentioned in despatches.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1915.¹ He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Field Artillery.¹ He gained the rank of GSO(2) in 1916.¹ He was awarded the Croix de Guerre Belgian.¹

     J. W. Smith held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)¹ He lived at The Rectory, Oundle, Northamptonshire, England.¹

     Margaret Alice Smith was the daughter of J. W. Smith.² She married Brigadier John Balfour Riddell, son of Colonel Robert Vansittart Riddell and Louisa Flora Steel Dick, on 6 August 1908.¹ She died on 20 February 1960.¹

     John l'Estrange Riddell was born on 30 September 1910.¹ He was the son of Brigadier John Balfour Riddell and Margaret Alice Smith.² He married Barbara Agnes Fairgrieve, daughter of M. McC. Fairgrieve, on 4 September 1939.¹ He died on 27 December 1984 at age 74 at Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales.^1,3
     He was educated at Oundle School, Oundle, Northamptonshire, England.¹ He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Artillery.¹ He fought in the Korean War between 1952 and 1953.¹ He was AAG, British Commonwealth Forces between 1952 and 1953.¹ He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)¹

     M. McC. Fairgrieve was appointed Fellow, Royal Society of Edinburgh (F.R.S.E.)¹

     Barbara Agnes Fairgrieve was the daughter of M. McC. Fairgrieve.² She married John l'Estrange Riddell, son of Brigadier John Balfour Riddell and Margaret Alice Smith, on 4 September 1939.¹ She died on 30 October 1999.¹
     From 4 September 1939, her married name became Riddell.
