James Spens, 2nd of Craigsanquhar was born in 1761.2 He is the son of Nathaniel Spens, 1st of Craigsanquhar and Mary Milliken.2 He married, firstly, Isabella Elizabeth MacLeod, daughter of John MacLeod of MacLeod, younger, in 1787.2,3 He married, secondly, Frances Stuart, daughter of Sir John Stuart of Allanton, Bt., in 1797.2,3 He married, thirdly, Elizabeth Joanna Davidson, daughter of John Davidson of Ravilrig, in 1804.2,3 He died in 1840.2
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 73rd Regiment (Roy Highland East Indies.)2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Fife.2
