     Sir Alfred James Newton, 1st Bt. was born on 18 November 1845.1 He was the son of George Beeforth Newton and Helen Rowe.2 He married Elizabeth Jane Watson, daughter of Joseph Watson, on 24 June 1874.1 He died on 20 June 1921 at age 75.1
     He held the office of Lieutenant of the City of London.1 He held the office of Sheriff of London and Middlesex between 1888 and 1889.1 He held the office of Lord Mayor of London between 1899 and 1900.1 He was created 1st Baronet Newton, of The Wood, Sydenham Hill, Lewisham, Kent and Kottingham House, Burton-on-Trent, co. Stafford [U.K.] on 18 May 1900.1 He was Chairman of the City Police Committee between 1906 and 1911.1 He was chairman of Harrods.3
