Sir Alfred James Newton 1st Bt. was born on 18 November 1845.1 He was the son of George Beeforth Newton and Helen Rowe.2 He married Elizabeth Jane Watson, daughter of Joseph Watson, on 24 June 1874.1 He died on 20 June 1921 at age 75.1
He was Lieutenant City London, last Sheriff London and –89, Governor Irish Soc, Alderman Bassishaw Ward, Lord Mayor London 1899–1900, Chm City Police Ctee 1906–11, Orders Lion and Sun Persia (highest grade), Leopold Belgium, Polar Star Sweden and Norway, Middx 1888.1 He was also known as 1st Baronet Newton [U.K. Life Peer].1 On 18 May 1900 so created on formation City of London Imp Vols.1
