He was the son of Otto Landgraf von Hessen and Adelheid Gräfin von Ravensburg.1 He married Elisabeth von Meißen, daughter of Friedrich I Markgraf von Meißen and Elisabeth Gräfin von Lobdaburg-Arnshaugk, circa 1319. He and Elisabeth von Meißen were divorced in 1340. He died on 3 June 1376.
