He was educated at Lostock, Cheshire, England.1 He was educated at Market Drayton, Shropshire, England.1 He was educated circa 1737 at Merchant Taylors' School, London, England.1 He was educated at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England.1 He was a writer in the Honourable East India Company Service in 1743.1 He was commissioned in 1747 with the rank of Ensign.1 He fought in the Siege of Pondicherry.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant.1 He fought in the capture of Devikota, with the forlorn hope.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for St. Michaels from 1754 to 1755.1 He held the office of Lieutenant Governor of Fort St. David in 1756.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1756.1 He fought in the Battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757, where he commanded 3,200 men who routed 50,000 foot and 18,000 horse and killed Surajah Dowlah.1 He held the office of Governor of the Honourable East India Company's possessions between 1758 and 1760.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 2 September 1760.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shrewsbury between 1761 and 1774.1 He was created 1st Baron Clive of Plassey, co. Limerick [Ireland] on 15 March 1762.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1764.1 He held the office of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bengal between 1764 and 1767.1 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) on 24 April 1764.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 24 November 1768.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Montgomeryshire between 1772 and 1774.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire between 1772 and 1774.3

Edmund Maskelyne was the son of Nevill Maskelyne. He married Elizabeth Booth, daughter of John Booth and Elizabeth Proger, on 4 February 1724.2 He died in 1744.2

Margaret Clive, daughter of Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive of Plassey and Margaret Maskelyne, on 11 January 1788.1 He died in December 1798 at Ireland, killed by rebels.
