     John Ernest Charles James Cochrane was born on 18 April 1870.1 He was the son of John Cochrane and Martha Little.2 He married, firstly, Eileen Mary Fottrell, daughter of Sir George Fottrell, on 29 July 1897.1 He married, secondly, Katalin Louise Margaret de Szilassy, daughter of Julius de Szilassy, in 1924.1 He died on 18 March 1938 at age 67.1
     He was educated at Sherborne School, Sherborne, Dorset, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG, in 1893 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was with Lagos Hausa Force in 1895.1 He was in the Expedition to the Gold Coast hinterland.1 He fought in the Ashanti War in 1900.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.) in 1900.1 He fought in the Boer War in 1902.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Hampshire.1 He was registered as a Member, Institute of Mechanical Engineers (M.Inst.M.E.)1 He fought in the First World War.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Field Artillery (RARO.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.)1

     He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Intelligence Corps.1

     He was educated at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Devon, EnglandG.1 He retired from the military, with the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, late of the Royal Navy.1 He was an executive with Jaguar Cars Ltd.1
