Sir James Makgill was the son of Sir David Makgill of Rankeillour and Elizabeth Ruthven.2 He married, secondly, Isabel Preston, daughter of Sir George Preston of Valleyfield.1 He married, firstly, Janet Crichton, daughter of James Crichton, 1st Viscount Frendraught and Marion Irvine, on 24 August 1665.1 He died circa 3 May 1699.1

James Crichton, 1st Viscount Frendraught is the son of James Crichton of Frendraught and Lady Elizabeth Gordon.2 He married, firstly, Lady Janet Leslie, daughter of Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven and Agnes Renton, after 1 October 1639.3 He married, secondly, Marion Irvine, daughter of Sir Alexander Irvine, 10th of Drum and Magdalene Scrymgeour, in 1642.4
