     Major Denis Leonard Stafford Northcote was born on 17 August 1904.¹ He was the son of Major Leonard Augustus Stafford Northcote and Lilian Cora van Praagh.² He married, firstly, Sylvia Smith, daughter of Colonel I. Manners Smith, V.C., in 1929.¹ He married, secondly, Beatrice Margaret Malcolm, daughter of Robert Malcolm, in 1947.¹ He died in 1978.¹
     He was educated at Clifton College, Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.¹ He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Artillery.¹

     Colonel I. Manners Smith, V.C. was invested as a Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.).¹ He was decorated with the award of the Victoria Cross (V.C.).¹ He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Indian Army.¹ He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.).¹
