Brigadier Robert Hanbury Tenison Aitken was born on 19 May 1955.2 He is the son of Major Harry Kerr Aitken and Marguerite Anne Tenison.2 He married Joanna Dawn Napier, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Lennox Alexander Hawkins Napier and Jennifer Dawn Wilson, in 1987.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He was educated at Queen's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He was Brigadier of the Royal Regiment Wales between 1995 and 1997.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier in 1999 in the 160 Brigade (Wales.)2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 2009.3
