Sir Godfrey Vignoles Thomas, 9th Bt. was born on 27 March 1856.¹ He was the son of Sir Godfrey John Thomas, 8th Bt. and Emily Chambers.² He married Mary Frances Isabelle Oppenheim, daughter of Charles Oppenheim, on 30 April 1887.¹ He died on 17 February 1919 at age 62, on active service.¹

Sir Godfrey Vignoles Thomas, 9th Bt. succeeded to the title of 9th Baronet Thomas, of Wenvoe, Glamorgan [E., 1694] on 13 July 1861.¹ He fought in the Afghan War between 1878 and 1880.¹ He fought in the Egyptian Campaign in 1882.¹ He fought in the Sudan Campaign in 1884.¹ He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901, where he was mentioned in despatches twice.¹ He gained the rank of Colonel War 1899 in the service of the Royal Artillery.¹ He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.).¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Essex.¹ He was decorated with the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1901.¹ He was Brigadier-General of the 3rd Division Artillery between 1909 and 1911.¹ Boer War.¹ He was Brigadier-General of the 24th Division Artillery between 1914 and 1915.¹ He was invested as a Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1916.¹ He was Brigadier-General of the No 2 Reserve Brigade FRA (Territorial Forces) between 1916 and 1917.¹
