     Cornelius Metcalfe is the son of Reverend Thomas Metcalfe and Anna Smelt.^1,2 He married Sarah Bayley, daughter of Samuel Bayley and Esther Diggles, in December 1773 at Collegiate Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹
     He lived between 1791 and 1795 at France^G.¹ In 1793 at Rouen, France^G, they were arrested along with their three children, and their proerty confiscated for the benefit of the Republic.¹

     Reverend Thomas Metcalfe was born in 1706.² He was the son of Thomas Metcalfe and Anne Greene.² He married Anna Smelt, daughter of William Smelt and Dorothy Cayley, in 1742.² He died in 1774.²
     He was Rector at Kirby Overblow, Yorkshire, England.¹

     James Bayley is the son of Samuel Bayley and Esther Diggles.¹ He married Margaret Hodgson on 3 June 1776 at Collegiate Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹
     He was a cotton merchant.¹ He was educated at Warrington Academy, Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹ He lived at Brown Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹ Before 1804 He was head of the firm of J. Bayley & Son, cotton merchants.¹

     Margaret Hodgson was born in 1756.¹ She married James Bayley, son of Samuel Bayley and Esther Diggles, on 3 June 1776 at Collegiate Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹ She died on 18 June 1793.¹
     From 3 June 1776, her married name became Bayley.¹

     Samuel Bayley is the son of James Bayley and Margaret Hodgson.¹ He married Harriet Anne Walker, daughter of Richard Walker.¹
     He was educated at Manchester Academy, Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹ He was a merchant and banker at Manchester, Lancashire, England^G.¹
