John Francis Erskine Goodeve-Erskine, 27th Earl of Mar was born on 29 March 1836.1 He was the son of William James Goodeve and Lady Frances Jemima Erskine.1 He married Alice Mary Sinclair Hamilton, daughter of John Hamilton, on 12 September 1866.1 He died on 17 June 1930 at age 94.1
He was given the name of John Francis Erskine Goodeve at birth.1 He was educated at Bristol Grammar School, Bristol, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Queens' College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He succeeded as the 27th Earl of Mar [S., c. 1115] on 19 June 1866.1 On 19 June 1866 his name was legally changed to John Francis Erskine Goodeve-Erskine.1 He was the Curate at Tedstone Wafer, Herefordshire, EnglandG.1 In 1885 an Act of Parliament was passed to correct the English judges of the House of Lords Privileges Committee 1875 whose decision misinterpreted the Scots legal terminology of the 1565 charter; in toto it was found that the medieval Earldom destined to heirs general as established by the charter of 9 Dec 1404 and with that precedence had been restored together with a new creation of another earldom destined to heirs male (which had not existed before 1875 although allowed precedence of the charter of 1565.)1 He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotalnd] between 1886 and 1922.1

Lady Frances Jemima Goodeve was born in 1831.1 She was the daughter of William James Goodeve and Lady Frances Jemima Erskine.1 She married Lt.-Gen. James Nowell Young on 29 March 1854.1 She died on 11 August 1887.1
