     Henry James Tufton, 1st Baron Hothfield of Hothfield was born on 4 June 1844.2 He was the son of Sir Richard Tufton, 1st Bt. and Adelaide Amelie Lacour.2 He married Alice Harriot Argyll Stracey, daughter of Reverend William James Stracey-Clitherow and Maria Diana Bourchier, on 17 December 1872.2 He died on 29 October 1926 at age 82.2
     He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Tufton, of Appleby Castle, co. Westmorland [U.K., 1851] on 20 June 1871.2 He held the office of High Sheriff of Cumberland and Westmorland in 1874.2 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Cumberland and Westmorland.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Kent.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Cumberland and Westmorland.2 He was created 1st Baron Hothfield of Hothfield, co. Kent [U.K.] on 11 October 1881.2 He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting in 1886.2 He held the office of Mayor of Appleby between 1895 and 1896.2

     He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Westmorland.2
