Sir Hugh John Macdonald was born on 13 March 1850.1 He was the son of Rt. Hon. Sir John Alexander Macdonald and Isabella Clark.1 He married, firstly, Mary Jane Agnes Murray, daughter of W. A. Murray, in June 1876.1 He married, secondly, Agnes Gertrude van Koughnet, daughter of Salter Jehosaphat van Koughnet, on 23 April 1883.1
He was a practising barrister.1 He gained the rank of officer in the Canadian Militia, during the Fenian Raids, Red River Expedition and the 1885 North-West Rebellion.1 He held the office of Attorney-General [Canada].1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) [Canada] in 1891.1 He held the office of Minister of the Interior [Canada] in 1896.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) [Canada] in 1896.1 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) [Canada] in 1899.1 He held the office of Prime Minister of Manitoba in 1899.1 He held the office of Police Magistrate of Winnipeg in 1911.1
