     David Clarke Bethune, 11th Earl of Lindsay was born on 18 April 1832.1 He was the son of David Ayton-Lindsay of Wormiston and Jane Emilia Ayton.1 He married Emily Marian Crosse, daughter of Robert Crosse, on 15 August 1866.1 He died on 20 March 1917 at age 84.1
     David Clarke Bethune, 11th Earl of Lindsay was baptised with the name of David Clarke Lindsay.1 He was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.1 He was educated at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 On 1894 his name was legally changed to David Clarke Bethune.1 He succeeded to the title of 20th Lord Lindsay of the Byres [S., 1444] on 12 May 1894.1 He succeeded to the title of 11th Earl of Lindsay [S., 1633] on 12 May 1894.1 He succeeded to the title of 11th Lord Parbroath [S., 1633] on 12 May 1894.1 He succeeded to the title of 10th Lord Kilbirny and Drumry [S., 1703] on 12 May 1894.1 He succeeded to the title of 10th Viscount of Garnock [S., 1703] on 12 May 1894.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Fife.1
