     Captain Francis Sydney Brain was born on 22 December 1893.1 He was the son of Sydney Brain and Gertrude Mary Atkins.1 He died on 3 October 1918 at age 24 at France, killed in action.1
     Captain Francis Sydney Brain was educated at Leighton Park School, Reading, Berkshire, England.1 He graduated from Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1915 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 1st Battalion, Dorset Regiment.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1
